Go-outdoors is hiking the world renowned 75km West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim
National Park. Come and experience this delightful guided seven-day backpacking
trek along the most rugged and beautiful coastline in the world, deep in the
heart of an old growth rain forest (no matter where you are in the park, if your
feet are not in salt water you are probably in rain forest), and by sandstone
cliffs, cascading waterfalls, storm-chiselled caves, sea arches, craggy sea
stacks and sandy beaches. Meet the challenge of hiking across streams, gullies,
scrambling over fallen trees, slippery boulders and narrow logs, climbing
precipitous vertical ladders and riding cable cars; all while catching glimpses
of Pacific gray whales, killer whales and sea lions offshore. Explore the
sheltered coves for bird and animal life and the pure tidal pools for all manner
of marine life. The experienced guides will lead you through the spectacular
maze of coastal obstacles assisting when and where necessary. But you will be
amazed at how you will learn to handle the challenges, as you build confidence
and gain insight into your endurance and inner strength.
This hiking trail between Port Renfrew and Bamfield was originally constructed
as a life saving trail by the government for future shipwreck victims, after a
tragic shipwreck in the early 1900s where all passengers perished. The wild and
rugged shoreline bordering a rain forest is known as the “Graveyard of the
Pacific”, because this section of the Pacific has been the site of more than 60
shipwrecks since 1854.
The West Coast Trail is a moderate to difficult level hike. Hiking and
backpacking experience is required. Participants must be able to hike hours
daily and carry a 22 to 25 kilogram (50 to 55 pound) pack. We begin the hike at
Port Renfrew; enjoy two scenic ferry crossings on route and end our adventure at
Bamfield.
Campsites are primitive with outdoor privies. They are great comfort spots at
the end of an arduous day to rest, enjoy a hearty meal, watch the breathtaking
Pacific sunsets and mingle with other hiking kindred spirits from all over the
world - great photo opportunities here and throughout the trip.
Meals are generous and suppers are deliciously prepared from homemade dehydrated
food – great for lighter backpacks. On the trail, indulge in a special treat of
fresh crab, approx. $20.00, as we cross Nitinat Narrows. Excellent!
Go-outdoors invites you to join us on the West Coast Trail –Where the open
Pacific Ocean meets rain forest!
